Independent Living Programs Overview

At Cottages on Mountain Creek, our Independent Living Programs are all about helping young adults make the leap from institutional settings to living on their own. Here’s what we cover:

  • Budgeting Money: Learn how to manage your cash, from paying bills to saving and investing.

Positive Outcomes and Research Findings

Outcome Area Participants in Independent Living Programs (%) Non-Participants (%)
Secured Employment 80 50
Stable Housing 75 40
Continued Education 65 30
Positive Relationships 85 55

These numbers speak volumes about how effective our programs are. We give young adults the tools they need to succeed and stand on their own two feet.

Helping Young Adults Spread Their Wings

Teamwork and Community Involvement

At Cottages on Mountain Creek, we get it—moving out on your own can be tough, especially for young folks dealing with mental health issues or past substance abuse. That’s why we believe in teamwork. Schools, public service agencies, families, and communities need to work together to create solid plans for these young adults. Did you know that nearly 30,000 kids aged out of foster care in 2009? That’s a lot of young people needing a helping hand (youth.gov).

Getting involved in the community can make a huge difference. When young adults participate in local activities, they gain confidence and skills that are super useful when they start working. Plus, it helps them build a support network, which is priceless when you’re trying to live on your own (youth.gov).

Figuring Out What They Need

At Cottages on Mountain Creek, we take the time to really understand what each young person needs. Research shows that about one in five kids has a mental health disorder (youth.gov). By getting to know their unique strengths and challenges, we can create personalized plans that fit their dreams and goals.

For those getting special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), planning for life after high school should start early—by age 16 at the latest. Our program makes sure these young folks are involved in planning their future, so the support they get is just right for them (youth.gov).

Age Group Percentage with Diagnosable Mental Health Disorder
Children/Youth 20%

We’re always looking for ways to make our programs better. By constantly checking how we’re doing, we can tweak things to better meet the needs of the young adults we support. This way, they get the best help possible as they step into independent living.
